This Common Design Mistake Is Secretly Sabotaging Your Success
Because colour isn’t just aesthetic—it’s energetic
There’s a couple of things I’ve seen time and time again in my 20+ years as a designer. Tell me if you can relate.
1. There’s a room in your home that, every time you walk in, makes you feel a bit edgy. Not in a dramatic, “I need to smash something” way—more like an uncomfortable niggle that means you never fully relax.
2. You’re at a networking event where everyone talks like a LinkedIn post and someone asks for your business card—or worse—your web address. You mumble something about them still being at the printers or that it’s ‘under construction’ before making a swift exit.
So what’s going on?
In the first instance you probably saw an article in a magazine that proclaimed “Squirrel’s Nuts” was the must have colour for 2024 so you went all in. Walls. Carpet. Sofa. Even the £40 candle you’ll never light because it’s literally money going up in smoke. Now you wish you’d chosen the shade of green that you actually really liked and didn’t require you to sell a kidney to get a 2 litre tin. But you don’t have the time or the budget to redecorate so you tolerate it, subconsciously simmering every time you sit down to watch Traitors.
The second example is why you’re not getting the clients you want. It’s why you’re posting pictures of your cat on your Instagram business page instead of a reel in your brand colours. Because you either a) got some Gen Z-er (who has no idea who you are or what you do) to design your marketing material for free, or b) paid a fancy schmancy design agency (who has no idea who you are or what you do) a small fortune to build your website. It’s really not you, so you resist sharing it.
But here’s the bit that most people don’t get: it’s not a design problem.
You are a hue-man being
Colour works on your nervous system before your conscious mind gets involved. Before you’ve even decided whether you like something, your brain has already begun processing it—triggering hormonal responses, activating memory, shifting your emotional state. This isn’t metaphor. Chromotherapy has documented this for decades, and environmental psychology has built entire fields around it. The colours you surround yourself with are in constant, silent dialogue with your biology.
Which means that when your personal spaces are designed from the wrong frequency—the wrong colours for your specific nervous system—you are being subtly dysregulated all day long. It can manifest as irritability, fidgeting, fatigue, or simply just a nagging feeling that something isn’t right.
When your brand identity carries that same misalignment, it communicates it outward. You hold back on sharing your links. And even when you do, your ideal clients feel something they can’t name either—a slight incongruence between what you’re saying and what you’re showing. So they don’t click, they don’t book.
Most people assume the solution is better design. More colour theory. A bolder palette. A different font.
But it’s not about aesthetics. It’s about energy.
The real reason you feel twitchy
When you choose colours based on trend, or what looks professional, or what’s working for someone else—you’re designing with a frequency that doesn’t necessarily match your own.
And your nervous system knows it.
Colour is a language. Each hue is communicating something—to you, to your clients, to anyone who encounters your brand or steps into your space. When those colours are yours, everything feels coherent. When they’re not, everything feels low key exhausting.
This is what Hue-man Design™ addresses.
Your personal colour frequency—drawn from your date of birth—determines the specific palette that works with your energy rather than against it. Not your favourite colours. The ones that are actually, architecturally, yours.
When a brand is designed from that frequency, the right people stop scrolling.
When a home is, you stop feeling like something sucked your soul out of your body every time you walk through the door.
The Colour Audit
I work with a small number of clients each month on something I call the Colour Audit.
It’s a 60-minute one-to-one session in which I map your Hue-man Design™ colour frequencies directly onto your brand, your website, your home, or all three. You leave with a personalised palette recommendation, clarity on exactly what’s misaligned and why, and specific guidance on what to change and how.
If you don’t already have your Hue-man Design™ profile, it’s included—it’s the foundation everything else is built from.
The investment is £297.
This is not a generic colour consultation. It’s not based on colour theory or trend. It’s based on your specific frequency—which means the result is yours entirely, and it works because it is who you are.
Let’s get your design aligned.
