4 Outdated Manifestation Methods That Are Wasting Your Time
The Secret turns 20 this year. It’s time to upgrade.
I’ve noticed a distinct shift in the way manifestation is being taught.
The Secret came out in 2006 and, credit where it’s due—it did something genuinely important. It catapulted manifestation out of the esoteric shadows and into the mainstream. Millions of people learned about the Law of Attraction. Everyone had a vision board. Even Oprah talked about it.
But it still had a whiff of the woo woo about it. The “ask, believe, receive” idea was just too abstract for most people.
What we now understand about frequency, identity, and emotional states is taking manifestation to the next level.
It hasn’t just changed. It’s grown up. And it went and got a PhD.
So if you’re still doing any of these four things, it’s time for an upgrade.
1. Making a vision board
Subject of many a manifestation workshop, the vision board has been an essential part of the process since day one.
You think of all the things you want, cut out pretty pictures, arrange them artfully on a big piece of card, and stick it somewhere you can see it every day.
The problem is, it’s purely cognitive—and your nervous system doesn’t respond to still images. It responds to emotion.
Staring at a picture of a seven star villa in Tuscany while feeling like someone for whom a Travel Lodge is too expensive is neurological whiplash. If the information is technically there but the emotional resonance isn’t, the dream will remain as such.
A vision board only works when it’s a feeling portal—when each image activates something in your body, not just your imagination.
✶ 2026 Update: Before you add anything to your board, ask yourself why you want it. If it’s purely ego based, bin it. But if not, go deeper until you uncover the base emotion that having it will give you. Notice where it lands in your body and then focus on creating that feeling in other ways.
2. Repeating affirmations you don’t actually believe
“I am wealthy and abundant.”
These kind of affirmations are staples of Law of Attraction 101. They’re said daily, robotically, preferably into the mirror.
But your subconscious isn’t easily fooled. It runs on felt evidence, not repetition. Slapping affirmations you don’t fully align with on top of existing limiting beliefs is like putting a framed motivational quote over the huge crack in the bedroom wall and calling it a renovation.
✶ 2026 Update: To reprogram your subconscious try asking yourself ‘why’ questions instead of making untrue statements. For example, “why do I make money so easily?” The brain will start searching for answers to validate the question, meaning they’ll begin showing up in your reality.
3. Visualising without an identity shift
The old version: close your eyes, picture the outcome for a few minutes, open your eyes and go back to being the same old you.
Here’s what modern manifestation understands: you can only manifest what your nervous system feels safe enough to hold. You can’t visualise your way into a reality you haven’t become yet. This is why so many lottery winners go broke—because they’re still operating from an old identity.
The quantum model isn’t “ask and wait”—it’s embody and receive. Think of it like method acting. A great actor doesn’t pretend to grieve. They access something real. This works because the nervous system doesn’t know the difference between what’s imagined and what’s actually happening—which means the body can hold a new identity before the external world reflects it back.
✶ 2026 update:Quantum jumping—the practice of consciously shifting into the identity of an alternate version of yourself—is the evolved form of visualisation. Instead of picturing the outcome, inhabit the person. How does she carry herself? What does she say yes to? What does she no longer tolerate? Start living from that version of you in small, concrete ways today. The external world catches up to the internal shift—never the other way around.
4. Treating manifestation as something you do, not a state you are
The journalling. The scripting. The rituals. I’ve nothing against these practices (except journalling, maybe) but if they’re just filling twenty minutes before bed and you wake up the next morning in your default state of scarcity, and driven by fear, they’re a bit pointless.
Manifestation was never meant to be a technique you do. It’s a frequency you are. Your energetic and emotional state—who you’re being when no one’s watching, and crucially when the thing you want still hasn’t shown up—is the whole mechanism.
It’s less about raising your vibration, and more about living from your energetic baseline and building from there.
✶ 2026 update: Instead of adding more practices, edit the ones you already have. Are they genuinely enjoyable? Or are they spiritual busywork that feels productive but is actually a bit of a chore? Knowing your natural frequency—what energises and what drains you—can help you to stay high vibe without having to try.
How to manifest in 2026
The thread running through all four of these is the same: the work is internal. It’s identity. It’s emotional state. It’s frequency. And it’s the ability to feel the reality you want before the external evidence exists.
I believe manifestation is possible for everyone—but it takes a lot of inner exploration, a willingness to look at all parts of yourself, and understand who you really are, underneath the mask of conditioning.
This is exactly why I use colour the way I do in my work—not for aesthetics, but as a tool. It’s one of the fastest, most primal routes back into your emotional body. Before the inner critic shows up. Before logic argues back. Colour bypasses all of that and goes straight to feeling.
