What The Colours You Wear Say About How You’re Really Feeling

That grey hoodie is sending you a message

We all have one, right?

A favourite hoodie that’s seen you through Netflix binges, hangovers, and more pizza deliveries than you’d care to admit.

It’s soft, comforting, and easy like Sunday morning. And I’m willing to stick my neck out and say it’s probably black, white or grey.

It may seem arbitrary but there’s actually a reason why we gravitate to certain shades and when you understand it, colour becomes a tool you can use to manage your energy and emotions so that life flows smoothly.

Achromatic armour

Up until a couple of years ago my entire wardrobe consisted of black, white and grey (save a few pairs of blue denim). At one point I had sixteen—yes, SIXTEEN—grey jumpers, 24 black tops and more white t-shirts than is practical for a painter.

None of these colours are ‘bad’. They’re information. But like everything else in our dualistic universe, there are two sides to every colour. And black, white and grey are three of the most extreme.

We all know black goes with anything. It’s also elegant, slimming, and it can give us a sense of power. But black can also keep us invisible—when wearing it we blend in or disappear completely.

Grey is the leisurewear industry’s favourite colour. It’s safe, inoffensive, and easygoing. On the flip-side, grey represents neutrality, indecision, and a lack of clarity. It’s energy-zapping and apathetic. It’s static. Energetically grey is saying, “I really can’t be arsed today” which is why it’s a popular colour for leisurewear.

White is crisp, fresh and pure. It makes you seem more approachable thanks to its simplicity. It’s also cold, unimaginative, aloof, and a bit blah. And it won’t hide those insecurities. Or the ketchup stains.

Back then I thought it was a style choice. I didn’t realise it was my soul speaking to me—protecting me and keeping me safe when I was at my most fragile and vulnerable.

What’s your soul saying?

Think of your wardrobe like the dashboard in your car. When a little orange light blinks on, the engine isn’t broken, it’s just telling you something needs attention. The colours you reach for each morning work in exactly the same way. It’s your soul’s way of communicating what you need to stay balanced.

So what might your soul be trying to say?

Red: I need energy, courage or a bit of oomph = Move your body.

Orange: I need fun, connection or play = Get creative.

Yellow: I need confidence or mental clarity = Find your inner strength.

Pink: I need softness, tenderness, or compassion = Love yourself.

Sky Blue: I need order, loyalty or integrity = Voice your concerns.

Purple: I need purpose or magic = Listen to your intuition.

Green: I need calm, balance or a new start = Remember to slow down.

And that’s where I’m at right now: all up in the green energy.

Last week I was unconsciously drawn to khaki green. I didn’t twig at first but then I realised I’d worn it three days in a row.

When I stopped to ask myself why, the answer was obvious: life suddenly got busy. My soul is reminding me to slow down, stay calm and find balance.

Here’s the magic part. When you start paying attention and actually wear certain colours with intention, you take your power back. It’s easier to maintain the equilibrium because you’re tuning your energy field, and as a result you’ll be far less likely to spiral when the shit hits the fan. It’s like walking around in a colourful protective bubble.

Here’s an easy exercise to help you tune into your soul’s messages:

  1. Notice. Tomorrow morning, pay attention to what you reach for before you’ve had time to overthink it. That first instinct is the honest one.

  2. Ask. What would this colour say if it could talk? What am I craving, or avoiding?

  3. Respond. Even a pop of the colour you actually need makes a difference: a scarf, a pair of socks, a lipstick. Anything that will remind you of what you need to feel.

Fade to black

You don’t need to burn your wardrobe and start again (although, it’s a great excuse to go shopping!). You’re simply learning to read the signals so you can give yourself what you need before it’s too late.

Take a look at the colours you wear most and see if there’s a pattern. And notice what colours are missing. Do they correspond to any characteristics that you have suppressed or would like to embody?

So tell me, what colour is your favourite piece of clothing, and what do you think it’s trying to tell you? Pop it in the comments. I’d love to know.

And if you feel completely lost, your soul colour is the one hue that will bring you back to yourself in an instant. Find out what yours is here.

Colour is not just eye candy. It’s a code. Sometimes you need electricity. And sometimes you need to lie on the sofa and be static.

Listening to your soul and choosing consciously is how you stay aligned.
