What Are Magnetic & Electric Colours?

…and how colour therapy uses them for healing.

Colour therapy is a holistic practice that utilises the power of different hues to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual healing.

Although often taken for granted, colour plays a significant role in balancing energy levels and enhancing overall well-being. We are light-sensitive beings and absorb the waves of energy through our skin as well as our eyes which is why some colours energise and uplift us while others can leave us feeling tired and depleted.

In this article, we will explore magnetic and electric colours, their therapeutic benefits and how you can incorporate them into your daily life for optimal health and wellness. We’ll cover:

  • What is colour?

  • Magnetic vs electric colours

  • Why green is a neutral

  • Tips for incorporating magnetic and electric colours into daily life

  • The importance of balance

Let’s start with the basics…

What is colour?

Colour is simply visible energy. The electromagnetic spectrum is the name given to the full range of electromagnetic radiation, of which visible light (aka colour) is just one band. It is organised by frequency and wavelength and visible light sits right in the middle between infrared and ultraviolet light.

The colour we see is a result of the rate of frequency and the length of the wave: slower vibration and longer wavelength produces red at one end with violet being the shortest wavelength (and the highest frequency colour observed by the human eye) at the other.

Magnetic vs electric colours

In colour therapy, the traditional seven colour spectrum is divided into two halves, magnetic and electric, with green being neutral in the centre.

The three magnetic colours are red, orange and yellow and are so called because they draw our energy downwards, connecting us with the earthly plane. These are the colours of the lower three chakras - the root, the sacral and the solar plexus.

The three electric colours are blue, indigo and violet. These cool colours are at the opposite end of the spectrum, have shorter wavelengths and a higher frequency. They are called electric colours because they draw our energy upwards towards the spiritual realm and connect us to our intuition and our higher selves.

Let’s take a look at each one in more detail and their healing properties.

Magnetic Colours

Red is often seen as the colour of passion, strength, and vitality. It is connected to the root chakra at the base of the spine, which governs our sense of security and stability. This energy is primarily concerned with our basic survival and physical health. Using red in colour therapy can help to stimulate blood flow and appetite. Red is also associated with movement and dynamism.

Problems such as arthritis, poor circulation and eating disorders can be alleviated by introducing more red into your energetic field.

Too much of it however, can result in aggression, hyperactivity or overeating. Its opposite colour of green can counteract any imbalance.

Orange is a warm and inviting colour that is associated with creativity, joy, and emotional balance. It corresponds to the sacral chakra located in the lower abdomen, which governs our emotions and relationships. Using orange in colour therapy can help to enhance feelings of pleasure and sensuality while also increasing self-expression and playfulness. This warm shade encourages feelings of optimism and enthusiasm.

On a physiological level, orange is energising but without the intensity of red. It can help to boost metabolism and libido. Given its association with with the reproductive system, Orange is a great colour to work with with if you’re suffering from PMS and other menstrual problems in women, or impotence in men.

If you find you’ve been over-indulging it may be that you have too much orange in your environment.

Yellow is a bright and cheerful colour that symbolises intellect, clarity, and positivity. It relates to the solar plexus chakra located above the navel, which influences our personal power and self-esteem. Incorporating yellow into colour therapy can help to boost mental clarity, focus, and confidence while also fostering a sense of inner strength and empowerment. Arguably the most positive colour in the spectrum, the sunny hue of yellow is brings happiness and light into our lives.

Yellow governs the nervous system, the pancreas and the liver. If you’re stressed or suffering with conditions like diabetes or digestive issues, yellow could be lacking. It helps to flush out toxins from the body.

Too much yellow, on the other hand, could result in overstimulation, leading to mental fatigue and nausea, so be sure to not to overdo it.

Electric Colours

Blue is associated with communication and truth. It is said to help improve verbal skills and facilitate open and honest conversations. In colour therapy, blue is used to treat conditions such as panic attacks, anxiety and insomnia, and is a good anti-inflammatory. It cools our system, reducing fevers and taking the sting out of rashes, burns and scratches.

If blue is lacking, there could be issues related to respiration such as asthma and bronchitis. Sore throats or laryngitis could also be a problem.

Indigo is associated with intuition and spirituality. This deep shade is believed to stimulate the third eye chakra, aiding in meditation practices and enhancing psychic abilities. Indigo can help strengthen intuition, encourage self-reflection, and promote a sense of inner wisdom. It is often used in colour therapy to treat issues related to the eyesight or headaches.

Violet is associated with transformation and spiritual growth. This colour is believed to stimulate the crown chakra, connecting us to higher levels of consciousness and spiritual guidance. Violet can help promote feelings of peace, harmony, and balance within ourselves. In colour therapy, violet is used to treat conditions such as depression, addiction recovery, and chronic pain.

Why Green Is A Neutral

Green is often seen as a neutral in colour therapy because it sits centrally in the energetic chakra system connecting the solar plexus (yellow) and the throat (blue).

Representing balance and harmony, it is the colour of nature and symbolises growth, renewal, and vitality. Green is an excellent choice for promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

In terms of healing properties, green is believed to have a balancing effect on the mind and body. It can help to restore equilibrium and promote overall well-being. Green is also associated with the heart chakra, which governs love, relationships, and emotional healing.

Physically, green is said to have a detoxifying effect on the body, helping to cleanse and purify our systems. In colour therapy, green is used to treat high blood pressure, heart problems and inflammatory diseases thanks to its calming and soothing properties.

Tips for incorporating magnetic and electric colours into daily life

Now that we’ve explored the healing benefits of magnetic and electric colours, here are a few easy ways to use them every day to maintain a harmonious balance.

1. Add pops of colour to your surroundings

Incorporate magnetic and electric colours into your home decor by adding throw pillows, blankets, rugs, or artwork in these shades. You can also paint an accent wall or add colourful accessories to brighten up any space.

2. Wear colourful clothing

Dressing in magnetic or electric hues can help boost your mood and energy levels throughout the day. Consider wearing a vibrant top or accessory to add a pop of colour to your outfit.

3. Use colourful lighting

Traditional chromotherapy uses coloured lighting to alleviate physical symptoms. Experiment with coloured light bulbs or LED strips to change the ambiance of a room. Soft pink or purple lighting can create a calming atmosphere, while bright yellow or orange light can increase motivation and focus.

4. Surround yourself with nature

Spend time outdoors surrounded by natural elements in magnetic and electric hues such as watching the sunset or sunrise, spending time forest bathing or by the sea, or walking through a garden full of vibrant flowers. Connecting with nature is essential for mental health and overall well-being.

5 . Visual meditation

Practice visualising magnetic or electric colors during meditation sessions to align your chakras and promote healing from within. If you struggle with visualisation I have created several colour therapy meditations on YouTube to help you connect more easily.

The importance of balance

When using colour therapy, it's essential to consider how different colours interact with one another. While there are no good or bad colours, using too much of one particular hue can create an imbalance in your energy field, leading to feelings of discomfort or unease.

You can maintain equilibrium by learning the complementary colour to each hue. Complementary colours are located on opposite sides of the colour wheel and can be used to offset each other. The basic pairings are:

Red / Green

Orange / Blue

Yellow / Purple

Overall, working with magnetic and electric colours in colour therapy is a wonderful way to maintain optimal health and vitality. By intentionally selecting colours according to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs, while also being mindful of creating harmony within your space, you can harness their powerful healing properties to support holistic wellness in mind, body, and spirit.

*Please remember colour therapy is a complementary therapy and should not be used as a substitute for conventional medicine. If you have any serious health concerns please seek advice from a medical professional.
