The Myth Of Dopamine Decor and How To Do It Right

Bright isn’t always better. Here’s how to make the dopamine decor trend work for you

Google images for “dopamine decor” and you’re met with a barrage of sickly sweet interiors with candy-coloured sofas, cute, childishly simple wall art and pattern-clashing that defies logic.

It’s straight outta Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

There’s lime green, vivid aqua, peach. And pink. Lots of it.

There are Instagram reels, Pinterest boards, and lifestyle mags telling you to “paint your walls sunshine yellow for instant happiness” or “add a pop of neon to boost motivation.”

It’s bright. It’s bold. It’s feel-good…or is it?

I call BS.

True Dopamine Decor is not about bright colours. It’s about the right colours. For you. And yes, the people you live with. Because your home isn’t just a backdrop—it’s a living, breathing emotional ecosystem. And if your walls clash with your energy (or theirs), no amount of pink will save you.

Why Dopamine Decor Gets It Wrong

Mainstream advice massively oversimplifies one of the most powerful tools for wellbeing: your environment. Sure, colour can spark joy—but it can also trigger tension, overstimulation, or subtle stress you didn’t even know was there. That “sunshine yellow” might look nice on Pinterest… but in your bedroom at 7 a.m.? It could be yelling at your nervous system like David Goggins.

Colour isn’t one-size-fits-all. Your choices should match your energy, not the latest trend.

Make it personal, not popular

This is where your Hue-man Design comes in. Think of it as your personal colour GPS. Your Growth colour governs health and wellbeing and tells you exactly which shade you need to embody to stay in a state of emotional equilibrium. And if your home is shared, it also considers the energy of those you live with—so everyone feels aligned and supported, not anxious and drained.

Wrong colours = friction.
Right colours = flow.

It’s that simple. But also, that revolutionary.

Here’s an example from my own life:

There’s a common belief that blue is the most calming colour. I’ve written about my subconscious negative association with blue before, and when I moved to my new home last year I decided to test this theory.

For the first six weeks I slept in the bedroom that was all blue. I say “slept”, but I was waking up two or three times a night, and generally felt uneasy whenever I was in there.

So I switched rooms.

In Hue-man Design, my Growth colour is red which means that feel safe and secure is paramount to my emotional stability. Interior designers will nearly always advise against using red in a bedroom—and indeed I agreed with that in the past—before I started considering colour as frequency.

So, I brought in terracotta and deeper shades like burgundy and rosewood to ground my energy at night.

The result? I’ve slept sound as a pound pretty much every night. And in the morning these colours fuel my energy. It’s a win-win.

The colours in your space should work for you, not simply fulfil an aesthetic desire.

3 steps to start your smart dopamine decor journey

  1. Take a look around your home and observe your reactions: which colours energise you? Which drain you? Are there any that make you feel tense?

  2. Experiment with small swaps: cushions, throws, wall art—tiny tweaks can make a huge difference.

  3. Take the leap: discover your full Hue-man Design. Align your space, your energy, and your wellbeing once and for all.

Forget what social media says. Forget the hype. Your happiness doesn’t come from a trend—it comes from knowing what is right for you.

Fade to black…

Real Dopamine Decor doesn’t have to mean bright. It’s about you. Your colours. Your energy. If you vibe with vibrant, by all means go for it. But if not, don’t force it.

Wherever you live—house, apartment, cabin or mansion—it’s your sanctuary, the place where you should feel most comfortable. And when you use your internal design as the starting point for your interior design you’ll be right at home.
