The 6-Letter Word That’s Ruining Your Life
Stop following generic advice and start trusting your own inner guru
“You should wake up at 5am!”
“You should post three times a day!”
“You should be more visible!”
At some point, the quest for personal greatness became a checklist. And I’m as guilty as the next person for thinking that my best self was only one more generic habit away. The thing I should be doing that I wasn’t.
I thought the answer lay in journalling because every guru and their dog says you should journal. Like, after EVERYTHING.
Crap with money? Journal.
Still attracting morons? Journal.
Broke a nail and cried for an hour? Journal.
Turns out, even though I love writing, I fucking hate journalling. It’s not fun at all.
Stop should-ing all over yourself
Here’s the thing I’ve learnt about ‘should’: it seems like it’s helping but it’s actually making you feel like shit. More than you already do.
Because what ‘should’ does is weaken your own instincts and puts your trust in someone else. And when you give your power away everything feels much harder than it needs to be. So resistance sets in. Before you know it you’re caught in a loop of misery, resentment and, eventually, burnout.
Ok, so that might be a bit extreme. My point is that doing all the things you think you “should” be doing might work for a while but it’s not sustainable. Because you’re forcing something that isn’t in tune with your natural frequency.
What works for one person won’t necessarily work for you. It’s not wrong. It’s just not energetically aligned.
Here’s a personal example: I thought I should grow my YouTube channel. It seemed like a good platform to share my work. I got over the cringe of being on camera but filming, editing, writing descriptions and uploading consistently—it was exhausting and that sucked all the fun out of it.
Writing comes much easier—I can post a short Note, an atomic essay (like this one) or a longer, more in-depth piece, and maintain consistency because it’s aligned with who I naturally am, which also makes it enjoyable.
Alignment isn’t about discipline. It’s about coherence. When something matches your natural frequency, it feels lighter. Effortless. And, most of all, fun.
Fade to black…
If posting multiple times a day on multiple platforms isn’t fun for you, find another way to show up.
If getting up at 5am makes you wanna scream at the dog and eat cake for breakfast, then it’s probably not a good idea to keep doing it.
Being ‘disciplined’ and that other awful buzzword—consistent—is much easier when you move to your own rhythm. Because it’s who you are.
So instead of blindly following what works for someone else, tune into your own energy and ask yourself, “how can I show up in a way that feels good for me?”
Because the things you enjoy, you keep doing. And you get better at them. You sustain them without force. That’s where real momentum comes from.
“Should” will keep you stuck in effort. Joy brings you into alignment faster than any morning routine ever will, and that’s when shift happens. Choose things that feel alive, interesting, and fun and you might actually be happy.
It’s the only thing you really should do ;-)

PS. Obviously there are some things you know you should do—brush your teeth every day, be kind, eat more veg.
