I Quit Social Media…And Had A Mystical Experience.

When you shut out the noise, your inner voice can be heard. And it wants to help you.

I never imagined that clearing the cache on my life would allow me to see trees ‘breathing’ but here we are.

I’ve wanted to write about this since it first happened but wasn’t sure how to even start describing the experience. Then, after my Substack Note about how removing the noise amplified my intuition went somewhat viral, it seemed like a good time to go deeper.

Because the reality is that I’m not special. We all have the ability to tune in to The Field—but the majority of people are too distracted.

I didn’t quit Instagram to become more intuitive. I left because it was too loud, made me feel like shit, and I was done having my life dictated by a fucking app.

But when the external noise dropped, the internal signals got clearer.

Without the constant dopamine drip of scrolling, comparing, reacting, and performing, something shifted. A quote that I have lived by over the last 6 or 7 years is attributed to the spiritual teacher Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati:

"Quiet the mind, and the soul will speak,"

It feels even more poignant now. My inner guidance is stronger than ever. It’s clearer, and more specific. And it wants me to learn to trust it.

This wasn’t a spiritual awakening. It was a recalibration.

The signs were there all along

I didn’t grow up in a ‘mystical’ household. My dad was a staunch atheist despite being born in India. Mum remains quite the skeptic, eye-rolling and humouring me whenever I talk about “all that hippy stuff”.

And yet I’ve been drawn to woo-woo stuff since I was a kid.

I’ve received a few undeniable signs over the years—like in 2005 when I was deliberating whether to accept a new job offer or stay where I was to focus on my art. I asked the question, then turned on the TV, catching the end of an ad for Citroën car. But not any Citroën.

A Citroén Picasso.

I turned the job down.

Fast forward to 2016 and, in the nightmare that is moving home, I had ended up sleeping on my brother’s couch for nine weeks (instead of the expected two) while the solicitors did whatever the hell they do. I could wait for the mortgage to go through or speed things up considerably by paying for the new property in ‘cash’. It was a risk, so again I asked the question to spirit.

For some reason I immediately had an urge to read my horoscope so I typed “Aquarius horoscope” into Google and clicked on the first page that came up.

It was an astrologer called Michele Knight and the headline for the Aquarius daily reading was—I shit you not—”CASH IS KING”.

Suffice to say I’ve been a devoted follower of Michele’s work ever since.

I only turned to this guidance when the stakes were high but after my dark night of the soul in 2020 I started to ask for signs more regularly.

As my spiritual practice grew, so did my intuition.

I ditched TV and quit alcohol cold turkey in 2021. Then, last year I removed even more of the noise—I deleted the Instagram and Facebook apps from my phone and stopped posting. My nervous system breathed a sigh of relief.

And that’s when things started getting weird.

Noticing the shift

My dreams were the first place I noticed the shift. They became more colourful, more symbolic, and more coherent. I mean they’re still pretty weird, but they feel less like random imagery and more like communication.

Psychology already understands dreams as the subconscious integrating information when the conscious mind finally gets out of the way. Less stimulation during the day means deeper REM at night.

I’m making a conscious effort to take a few minutes when I wake up to review and decipher any dreams I remember. I fully believe that it’s one way that my guides get messages to me.

Then there is the ‘voice’. Every so often, usually when I’m in meditation, I ‘hear’ messages. I’m putting those in inverted commas because it’s not an audible voice, more an internal kind of knowing. Perhaps even telepathic?

I’m not talking about intrusive thoughts or emotional spirals. I’m talking about brief, neutral, instruction-like insights that arrive out of nowhere without panic, urgency, or charge.

I know it’s not my voice. Because sometimes I’ll get words I never use or names that sound made up but when I Google them, make complete sense to my situation.

I first heard it in 2023 when it gave me the word ‘Chromagik’. But recently it’s amplified.

And so we come to the curious case of the ‘breathing’ trees.

I see…energy (not dead people, thankfully!)

I’ve been writing about colour as energy for a while now. I’ve deep dived into chromotherapy and colour psychology. The system I have created is more representative than literal—I’ve never been able to see auras around people or anything else.

But that’s starting to change.

A while back I was sitting in stillness on my favourite tree (I am at peace in the woods) when I remembered a chapter from the book The Celestine Prophecy where the characters practice seeing energy fields by focussing intently on something in nature.

So obviously I thought I’d give it a go.

I relaxed my eyes, and stared at a fine young oak about 20 feet in front of me.

Nothing happened. For a really long time.

But then slowly, at the base of the trunk, I began to see something. A shade of yellow-green unlike any other. Not a light, more like air—like when you can see your breath on a really cold day. And it was pulsing, just like a breath: in…out…in…out.

I was immediately skeptical, thinking it must be my eyes—or something in my own brain that was pulsing to my heartbeat. So I held my breath. The tree continued at its own steady rhythm.

I blinked, shook my head and tried again on another tree further away. Same thing. And another one nearer. All ‘breathing’ and exhaling this vivid yellow-green energy.

The truth is out there…

I left the woods that day feeling enchanted..but also a bit confused. It was pretty cool and that but WTF was I supposed to do with it?

I asked for help and the answer that came was blunt:

“You needed to see the truth.”

Ah yes, I forgot—our guides know everything, and they had sensed that I was still harbouring some doubt over what I am building with Chromagik. On more than one occasion I’ve questioned myself, thinking what if I’m just making this all up? What if it’s all bullshit?

They showed me the truth so that I have absolute conviction in my work. Everything is energy. And that energy has a colour.

Fade to black…

I’ve taken bit of a risk sharing this experience but judging by the number of you who resonated with my viral Note, I think it is a risk worth taking.

What’s interesting too, is that this kind of conversation is no longer confined to spiritual circles. In her recent book The Signs, Dr. Tara Swart (love her) explores intuition, pattern recognition, and signalling through the lens of neuroscience rather than belief.

The takeaway is simple: perception improves when the system is less overstimulated. Intuition isn’t spiritual superiority. It’s biological intelligence functioning without interference.

When you pay less attention to the voices from the outside you begin to trust in the one that was there all along. The one that has been guiding you from day dot.

And in my experience, it didn’t show up when I was seeking external validation, pretending to be someone I’m not, or doing all the things the online gurus tell you to do.

It emerged when I stopped scrambling my signal and went back to basics—and yours probably will too.

So if you’ve been thinking about leaving social media, consider this your sign.

You are the only guru you need.
